From a computer outsider...

Both were originators in their field, but tend to get looked down on by more 'mainstream' system owners. Admitting to owning either is likely to get scoffed at quite often for not being seeerious.
Equally, both attract highly rabid supporters/fanboys.
Both are currently more popular for portable systems that aren't the core of their business.
Both produce systems that attract attention for looks as well as performance.
There's a singer Mario and a band G4 (one of those talent-show type bands). I never heard of a band named Pentium or Lara Croft. *g* (Okay, that was weak.)
