Been through trying to clean up my HD a bit today. Clear stuff out onto DVD and external drive. Mostly videos, really.

...Says a lot that before I started work I had more disk taken up with MP3s than I had free space. XD There's a surprisingly large chunk of files that's Halo saved games, too, and another equally big chunk that's Sims saved stuff. ^_^;; I never use GarageBand, and that's taking up a whole load of room, but I don't know how I'd reinstall it if I ever needed it so I can't touch it... and the iDVD program is over a gigabyte on its own, but I do use that on occasion.

As it is, I've gotten it back to 32GB free out of 75. Probably the healthiest it's been in a while. Weird to see how the drive fills up with swapfiles and virtual memory stuff as I use it, too. Reboots are a computer's friend, even if they are as solid as this one.

Nuking old computer.

Here goes nothing.

At least the reinstallation kicked off okay.

-

I need more Heroes icons that aren't Sylar. Though as I only have the one icon slot left, yeah.

-

Edit: That went surprisingly smoothly. o_O Although the printer and scanner STILL don't work.

So I've just gone round transferring all the data from our creaky old computer to the shiny Vista jobby. Still not having any 'omg vista evil' problems with it yet. It's not like we install enough software for 'cancel or allow' to be a big deal. XD It's a nice little machine.
However, I'm being asked to do a reinstall cleanup whatever on the old computer. The LAST time I tried that, it took forever. I'm half tempted to start experimenting with Ubuntu or something on there, because it can't be any worse.

...Firefox's spellcheck lets 'Ubuntu' through, but it doesn't let 'omg' or 'spellcheck' through.

Durandal gave me the biggest freakout it has for a long time earlier. Was just doing stuff in Photoshop and the thing goes and... well. I've seen crashes. I've seen freezes. I've seen kernel panics and screens of death in various colours. (Usually, the thing's rock solid but everything gets twitchy now and then, I guess. I hardly ever *have* to reboot, it spends most of its time in sleep mode when I'm not using it, but do so every so often anyway when stuff starts to get a bit slow.)
I've never seen everything vanish off my screen except for my wallpaper and a couple of blue blocks, then it just going to a plain blue screen with just my mouse pointer on (which moved, OK)... tried to hit the off switch but didn't respond. Dropped the lid to put it to sleep, that worked, then woke it back up again and the switch off and restart message seemed to have gotten through. All safe.

Until I remembered that I hadn't saved the report I was working on for college for Friday. AAAARGH. The day I try to get ahead of myself, grr...

Speaking of computers crapping out, the parents' old one has finally given up the ghost. Mum thinks it's to do with the fan, we've always had trouble with that, but she says it just wouldn't switch on last time she tried to use it. Eh, it was ancient anyway - Windows ME. Says it all, it did good lasting as long as it did. Good job we should have all the stuff from it backed up on my HD, I'm just hoping it hasn't scrambled the files as I've known it do.

Parents are still getting the hang of the Vista comp. The copy of IE7 it has on there has the Norton fraud-protection banner running on it, saying whether or not the website's been checked for phishers and greeblies. It complained about not being able to scan the page once - and this was on the MSN home page, nothing more harmful than it being Microsoft - and Dad got paranoid and ran round rebooting even when I tried to explain... still haven't gotten the hang of 'uh, cancel or allow'? when that comes up either. The touchpad on the thing's twitchy as anything, too, it's very easy to accidentally click something. Overall, though, it's doing pretty good.

Programming class today. After my first few test programs, I'm getting a reputation. Heh. The program itself was just sorting random numbers; finished the first version, teacher mentions trying to do a reverse one but changes her mind.
Teacher: "...Knowing you, you'd probably make it into a secret code, or the amount in a bank account."
Me: "I don't make all my programs evil!"
Teacher: "That just means you haven't finished them yet."
Me: >_>

If I ever do one where I get the chance, I'm going to make it go all 'My name is Melissa O'Malley and I'm seven years old! I like honeybees, playing hide-and-seek, and building sandcastles with my brother ^__^.' And she'll never know.

Also,First quiz I've done in ages. Heroes. )

Okay. This is just weird.

Whenever Durandal comes out of sleep mode/standby, there's a distinctive noise as the hard drive and whatever spring into life. The only way to wake it up when the screen's down is to either move the mouse or lift the lid.

I was woken up to the sound of that startup whirr and the 'eep' noise that I've set as my email alert.
Went to look - and said computer was sleeping like a baby.
I did, however, have an email when I flicked the lid up to look. Just a comment reply, nothing major. But still.

So... we have a new computer in the house as the old one was on its last legs.

It's another laptop. Dad just fell in love with the thing in the shop and went for it. Not very high specs, compared to a lot that were on the shelf, but it was cheap and cheerful - says a lot, really. XD
And it has Vista.

So far, the installation is proving surprisingly painless, I've just chucked Norton on there and it's doing a system scan. Looks like the Internet is working okay, at least we could download the updates for Norton, though the guy in the shop was a little worried about it playing nice as it's so new. Going to stick Works on there in a minute and get it grooving with Mum's and Dad's accounts. (Edit: And it's all up and running now.)

I've nicknamed it Cortana. ;)

...must not click on link to 4chan.
...must not click on link to 4chan.
...must not click on link to 4chan.

...
...must not click on /b/.

Actually, not clicking on /b/ isn't too hard. It's freaking /b/ and is therefore death by meme and WTF and where the internet goes to die. I like my brain where it is.
I just don't know what else to run the hell away from.

AU worlds are fun stuff. Though can't help but find myself pulling my hair out at times trying to make things fit together. There's still so many bits missing on the original RvB crossover I was working on...! Damn, need to get down to writing again. Hate it when this happens.

They also lend themself to fun stuff drawing. So, so happy with his armour.

On another note? I am STILL clicking on the wrong box to swap icons. I don't actually mind it where it is so much, it's just habit...!

Edit: If anyone catches me making any serious bloopers with regard to what happened in Halo 2's story - still yet to play it (has more or less been confirmed I'm getting a '360 XD) - that can't be explained away by K going 'hey, before I was born, different world, no-one tells us humans anything' - could you poke me?
dragonchan_archive: (Default)
I hate it when comment notifications go and DIE. Gyah. They're currently dripping through at a rate of... well, if I didn't check the page I made the post to, I probably wouldn't even realise I had anything new there to reply to. I'm getting ones from four hours ago through now. So, so annoying. Is this happening for anyone else?

Have been given the dates for this semester's exams in college. Fortunately, I've just got the two for now - one maths (potential cakewalk if I revise, I did most of it for A-level) and one for material science (not so cakewalk, have to remember diagrams but the basic theory's not too bad). This is the first time I've done actual exams in four years...! In some ways, it's weird, I'm almost looking forward to the challenge. Or to just seeing how well my brain still is.

Router was a blip. It's not working again now. We're definitely going to order the official one just so no-one can pass the buck.

Some idiot crashed into the bus on the way home from college. No-one was really hurt, though one old lady got thrown out of her seat - she seemed okay - and a kid got a bruise. This dork just pulled out from a side road without looking where they were going, the bus tried to dodge, but just ended up mashing headlights into each other. Spent half an hour sitting around waiting while insurance details got exchanged, the cops got called, we got a spare bus, and everything else... if I'd had had a proper backpack not just my shoulder bag with all my stuff in I'd probably have walked it instead. Would've been as quick. But hate carrying the shoulder bag long distances.
dragonchan_archive: (Default)
...wtf, router just started working again like THAT. I hope this isn't a blip, or that disconnecting it's going to mess things up again...
dragonchan_archive: (Default)
It's been over a month since the router started playing up. We've been playing shuffle-the-modem since then. I've tried everything I can think of to get the thing working again, reset it, restarted it, updated the firmware, tweaked the settings, but still, nothing'll work, nothing'll work at all... we got about ten minutes connection the other day but that was all...

And I feel guilty for not doing more. I feel like somehow if I just try one more thing it'll WORK. Maybe I shouldn't post this after watching FMA because it just gives me a head full of equivalent exchange ideas, but I just can't shake that feeling... I just feel like if I try hard enough the thing'll jump into life, and that I'm doing things wrong for not trying. Like I'm letting people down.

Figure we'll end up just buying the router that virgin.net recommend (which I think'll actually play nicer with the DS, too) so we can yell at them if things don't work out.
dragonchan_archive: (Default)
Aaaand the ongoing saga of the freaking router.
Thought we were getting somewhere earlier - the thing was actually connecting. For, oh, about 1 second at a time. Then dying. So we called up virgin.net, and the guy did not seem to have a clue what the hell was going on. Usual checklist. What's plugged in, does x work, does y work...
And then mum went and unplugged the phone in an attempt to go 'yay, we haven't got anything else interfering with the line!!' Well done. >_> And the guy's saying we don't get 1mb internet. I know we get 1mb internet. I have checked the connection speed online. Maybe he knows something I don't, okay, but all the test I've done? Nngh. We might end up getting a new router - one of their Official Approved ones, just so we can actually put the blame on them if it cacks up too.
Tried to ring Belkin instead, but all we got was 'whisper'. Phone = suck.

The parental computer is being weird, so parents are taking a scorched-earth approach to fixing it. Everything onto the external HD and reinstall. Yay. :( Did they forget how long it TOOK LAST TIME? How many problems we had? I'd rather go and get Windows XP if we're doing this.
dragonchan_archive: (Default)
...It's been a loooong time since I've had any spam get past Gmail and into my inbox. But they seem to be sneaking through again at long last.
Damn. No, I do not want your badly spelt pr0n, moroncakes.

-

Also; HGFHGFSADHGFHGFLASD headache. Ah, been a while. Not long enough. Where did I put the paracetamol? Woke up in the middle of the night with my head pounding. Ow.

-

More ideas on the Halo AU. Unfortunately, the word count is still not going considerably UP. And I had a nice little intro written up last night but then the computer went and CRASHED. ...?!?! (Okay, I kinda fell over the modem.)
dragonchan_archive: (Default)
Hmm. College Pt. 2 is going okay so far. I seem to be making some dumb mistakes in maths stuff but I just need to get my brain back into gear and learn how to use the damn new calculator. We don't get to play with plane bits for a while, but... ah well, cookie crumbles and all that.
Need to find steel-toecap boots. ^_^

Weird thing is I can look around any class and only see one female face, and she's an exchange student. (Or, in the right class, a teacher.) Huh.

-

On a non-college note.

This post is for every post I've ever read that goes 'if you support X, post this in your journal'. Thing is, a long time ago, I swore I wouldn't pass on chain stuff just because I was told to. The old 'pass this on to five people and get good luck!!' things. I never pass anything on - more to the point, I never pass anything on I'd have to expect other people to pass on after me. I never tag on memes, and if I get hit with a tagging meme I'll do it but take the clause out.
So onto the good causes. A lot of these things I see, read, wherever throughout LJ? Damn, I believe in what they're saying. Why don't I pass them on? Because for all I support and believe in what I'm reading, I don't ever force anyone to forward what I'm writing. Don't think because I'm not forwarding or reposting, I don't care. I feel bad about not passing them on, but it's something I don't do.

One thing I do do, though. I do care...

(On a lighter note on the topic, though, [profile] frankthecomic;))

...just read there's gonna be a Halo RTS. I ain't a fan of the genre, tho' I've dabbled on Advance Wars, but I'm still gonna yell HELL SWEET. And the trailer kicks ass.
Plus Peter Jackson and Microsoft and Bungie types are getting together to do... stuff. Halo stuff and totally new stuff. Wingnut Interactive. Should be interesting...

Getting the internet problems pinned down. It's an issue with the router; I've got Durandal running off the ADSL modem and it's happy as can be. Though this means we've got to run the damn modem up and down stairs when whoever wants internet, at least it's SOMETHING.

And yep, you might have noticed, paid account. :D Splashed the cash for Caboose too. And I've still got a bit of time left over from when I had the 100 icons before so might take advantage of that...

At last...

So got home Sunday, jetlagged like crazy from a night flight. And then the internet decides to be an absolute pain. The connection has been screwed up; it's working at the moment but I have no idea how long it's gonna survive for. I'm gonna give it a little while before anything... I hope it behaves... so far, only the downstairs computer is behaving, I'll have to try and fix up the wireless connection again later but I'm just using what I know works for the moment, heh.

But anyway, home now and settling back into the routine of life again. Will try and go into more stuff and put the photos up later when I know the computer's going to behave long enough. ^^;;

At freaking last. I just got ♥ to show up properly on my Firefox. Up until now, for some reason, it's always showed up as just a | kind of line - I only knew it was a heart because it shows up as one in other programs, just not Firefox! That's one annoyance off my back. (I had to go change the Japanese font settings. THAT MAKES NO FREAKING SENSE.)

And I have nothing to do before tomorrow. At least until I find the suitcase. And it'll take five seconds to dump everything in there...
dragonchan_archive: (Default)
...okay, Durandal is really living up to the name today. Guh.
I'm trying to make icons from Out of Mind; I've gotten up to the beginning of 5 saved. But for some reason I was plodding along, screencap, screencap, screencap (I'd just gotten up to when York gets... yeah) to and all of a sudden wham.
Not just Photoshop crashing - it took down Quicktime and Firefox and Adium at the same time, and somehow kills the clipboard so I have to REBOOT. What the hell? THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN.

Second time this has happened too.

-

Edit: Make that THREE times. The EFF, Durandal?

-

Edit 2: Why've they started putting the Inside RT comics on the RvB news page? That's weird. (Have started thinking of Luke's stuff like book covers. Nice, and has an official kinda stamp to it, but it ain't necessarily what the book actually says. ;) )
