Just got back from my first ever karate competition. (Yeah, b&w belt and never competed before. Sad or what? Not my choice, there haven't been many locally. ) A good experience, but...
Kata went okay. Lost in the first round, but as that was to the eventual winner (who's one of those people with mad skillz anyway), I didn't really mind. Knew I was going down as soon as I saw it was him... ^^;; Think I did alright on my own count, though. Well, my folks said I did, but they're not experts. I'll just trust that they weren't trying to butter me up.
The kumite - the fighting - though. Oh god.
Only two of us older girls in the competition, and sensei didn't want us going against the lads for whatever reason so just the one round. It went something like this.
Me: *dive in attack attack attack RAAH*
My opponent: *block block sneaky little attack underneath*
Me: *perfectly unharmed*
Judges: "Point goes to Blue!"
Referee (sensei): "Are you okay? Take that gumshield out... Breathe... breathe..."
Me: (thinking) I'd be okay if you just let me get back in the ring!
Repeat about ten times. I fight IRL the same way I fight in video games. And it doesn't work any better there either. v_v
No sour feelings towards my opponent, she beat me fair and square. And she's a green belt, too, but apparently she's managed to get a lot more experience fighting in her club. Good for her.
But I don't, as a rule, do Precious Fragile Little Flower routines very well. I don't mind being knocked about. So being stopped to make sure I was okay every ten seconds? Not cool. I was fuming when the match finally stopped. Gaaah.
