Okay, apartment in New Orleans didn't have wifi so I'm catching up from the airport before we head on to our last stop.
The place was great. :) Let's see... day one we spent running around on the streetcars to get a view of the city, and stopped off at the French Market afterwards to browse the goodies there. I think it used to be a food market, but since Katrina it's been more of a souvenir and flea market place?
(And yes, Katrina. While most of the place - at least the French Quarter, where we were staying - is looking good and restored, there's still the odd sign. Louis Armstrong Park's closed, here and there's construction going on, stray houses and roads looking roughed up... it's gotten into the local culture, the artists paint images of flooded streets and even humourous pieces of houses piled on houses or built on boats. Recovering, but not there.
Anyway...)
Evenings, we headed over to Bourbon Street. It is the essence of bar filled craziness. And they didn't really bother ID-ing me, surprisingly... I got acquainted with daiquiris. Evening of first full day, though, went on a Haunted Town Walking Tour. Not sure the guide wasn't making some of his stories up.
Second day, we visited the Mardi Gras World exhibition - it's a fair walk there, but it was cool. Got a look at how they build and design all the carnival floats, a bit of a talk about the history of everything (it's bigger than I thought!). Had a bad case of the 'I want to be able to do that's. XD
Third day, we started off by looking at the artists around Jackson Square; lots of 'em there, selling pictures. Mum bought a few. (And we then had hell from FedEx when we got them sent home.) Went on a steamboat trip up the river. Got sunburnt like mad. Filled up on souvenirs.
And now just waiting for the last leg of the trip, now ... Orlando. Of course. :p
