Continuing saga of messed up computer.

The thing's still not staying active. I get to the OSX desktop for about five seconds, Adium and Thunderbird start to auto-load, and then "Please restart your computer!" flashes up and I facepalm. Good news is, I know my HD is okay (I've been a bit slack on backups - NO MORE!!!); I've managed to get into text-only troubleshooting mode far enough to check that out but I don't know how to do anything else from there. What the heck can it be? Issue with OSX itself, maybe? Argh. It won't load far enough for me to even log out of my account... Hm, have I still got my install disk anywhere? If I had access to another Mac I think I could copy files across from mine onto there, system seems functional enough for that, but I don't know any other Mac owners.

Well, it was getting on a bit, anyway, but still. I foresee a trip to the Apple store.

Okay, know what's wrong with the computer now. The RAM's borked. To be honest, I'm kind of relieved; data's safe, everything else is good, I know how to put RAM in, although I'm suspecting that might have been the cause of the issue in the first place, now - the last lot I got was from a place I didn't know. I think it's time for a trip to the computer parts shop.
