In 2517, responding to an increasing threat, seventy-five children were taken to be soldiers. Ripped from the hearts of their families and thrown into a new one.
These were the first generation of Spartan-2s. John, Kelly, Linda, Sam, Frederick - each brave, each loyal until death. Or until being classified 'missing in action'.
In the years to follow, others joined - or were taken. Every few years, another group of children drafted into a new life. Some never made it, and found themselves digitized and made into AIs. Some had a stranger fate still.
And in some universes, that was where it ended.
In others, that was where it began.
In 2542, the news broke on unsuspecting worlds that their green-armoured defenders weren't recruited but abducted. The outcry was vast and immediate, tearing the tiers of government and army alike to shreds.
Rival factions had to hold together, though. The Covenant weren't going to wait for humanity's petty squabbles. And in the end, a solution was reached.
Recruitment for the Spartan-3s started immediately. The first were taken from the ranks of the existing army and navy, but within a few years, new recruits were walking off the street and into Mjolnir armour. Many hardly regarded the risks they were taking by joining the program - or it didn't matter. It was that or see their worlds glassed.
Even then, though, things weren't perfect. The Spartan problem was only the tip of an ugly iceberg.
The day that John-117 - known to all as the Master Chief - dealt the Covenant a death blow should have been a great one. The military world Reach had already been saved by the combined Spartan forces, after coming under the heaviest fire ever - it should have been time to celebrate.
It wasn't. Without the Covenant as a focus to aim at, further cracks appeared in the unstable political situation. Whoever started using the terms 'Reds' and 'Blues' was unknown, but it didn't take long for the terms for the political factions involved to pass into everyday usage.
And even less time for human space to descend into chaos and civil war... while far off in the galaxy, the Covenant regrouped...
