I'm afraid.
To look at me - you'd see the biggest computer lover around. The sort of girl who wears a Space Invaders T-shirt to college and a microchip necklace. The sort who'll all but sleep with her Powerbook under her pillow. And the only reason I don't do that is in case I break it.
But... to tell you the truth...
Technology's starting to frighten even me.
I like being human. I like being able to step away from the rush of technology now and then. Clear my head.
But we're in a society now that seems to deem it impossible that you should ever step away from this headlong rush. That you should never switch off your mobile phone, never disconnect from the Net.
I see shows on TV. Clothing with inbuilt media players. Little headset displays providing info to you every second. Technology all around, all integrated.
Even talk of little audio implants and receivers.
It's the last that terrifies me.
Just because I draw cyborgs doesn't mean I want to be one, thank you very much.
And if we're so plugged in, what control do we have of our own fate? The online world is one of control, where both everything and nothing is free. One where everything you see and do is available to view. And you don't always have the option of making it Friends Only.
Everything we do, everything we say, is media-tated. Our thoughts are put into the slenderest of silicon chains, and every day those bonds get stronger.
I guess the old saying really is true.
Maybe resistance is futile.
(To paraphrase Sideshow Bob - I am aware of the irony of appearing online in order to decry it, so don't bother pointing that out ;)
