Damn, he knew what he was talking about (there, anyway). The quote's talking about animated characters, but it's so true overall... I mean, isn't it what creating a character's about? Not just to have them run around doing silly stuff because they can, but to be real? To ring true?

Until a character becomes a personality, it cannot be believed. Without personality, a character may do funny or interesting things, but unless people are able to identify themselves with the character, its actions seem unreal. And without personality, a story cannot ring true to the audience.
