Strange how things change...
Nov. 1st, 2003 10:43 pmI've been following two LJ sagas of late.
One - Thalia's story.
In the past, she's been known as a smart girl and an excellent writer. Until she starts putting out that she's been bullied to hell. Everyone jumps in to be sympathetic - hell, I do too, and I only know her by reputation.
Then she admits she made the whole thing up.
Oh, and another couple of sob stories too.
Needless to say, she isn't exactly miss popular any more. And there's not much chance of her regaining her reputation any time soon.
Two - Natalie's and Emily's story.
This starts as the mother of all arguments. Emily chews out Natalie in terrible netspeak over something her friend says to her. It escalates into major mudslinging, and a 2000-plus comment flamewar. Emily doesn't look like the smartest cookie in the jar.
They talk again later. In a more civilised fashion.
Turns out, without the l33t netspeak, Emily's a helluva lot smarter than she looked, and is a bit of a bookworm too. The flamewar participants find themselves sincerely apologising though the foot in their mouths. I'm considering friending both Natalie and Emily.
Just goes to show. People can put out so many different images, so many different faces... how can you ever tell what someone's really like? Online or offline?
